The RELATE Communication Fundamentals Workshop is an intensive course that prepares early-career researchers to effectively communicate their research with audiences of all backgrounds. Held weekly during the summer months, “Summer Workshop” pairs a discussion-style seminar format with activities designed to practice these communication skills. Participants work towards developing a short talk for lay-audiences, to be delivered at an event organized with our community partners or to be shared on YouTube. Giving and receiving constructive feedback is an integral part of this process. This emphasis culminates in the final week of workshop, in which participants practice their talks in front of an audience of their peers, workshop alumni, our faculty advisors, and friends of RELATE.

Summer workshop is intended for early-career researchers in any of the STEM disciplines (science, technology, engineering, mathematics). Workshop sessions occur weekly for two-and-a-half hours at or near the end of the work day. The duration of Summer Workshop varies from year to year in the range of 8-10 weeks, so make sure to check out the details for our most recent workshop.

Participation in the RELATE Communication Fundamentals workshop is open to all graduate students and postdocs at the University of Michigan, but workshop content is geared towards participants in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) fields.
